Have footage that has turned out too fast? Want to transform your ordinary video into a slow-motion clip? Either way, you can do that quickly and easily with a proper video editor. Since there is a lot of software on the market, here are 4 carefully selected programs with a step-by-step guide on how to slow down a video in each of them.

1. iMovie

If you are an Apple user, try adjusting the speed of your clip with iMovie. It’s a free app that you can use on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You may also use it to trim and merge your videos, add text, apply filters, and even record voice narration.

  1. Open the app after downloading it from the App Store and start a new project.
  2. Add the footage you want to slow down.
  3. Select your clip in the timeline by tapping on it.
  4. Hit the Speed icon at the bottom of the screen and drag the slider left to make your video slower.
  5. You’re done! Save your slowed clip on your device or share it via social media.

2. Clideo

If you don’t want to install anything on your device due to limited storage space or you are an Android user, then check out Clideo. It’s a web-based tool that lets you slow down a video in a flash online. You don’t need to create an account to decrease the speed of your footage unless you want to download it without a watermark or make further adjustments.

  1. Go to the Clideo web page and select the Speed tool.
  2. Choose the file from your library by clicking on the same-name button.
  3. Wait a bit while the program uploads your video.
  4. Fine-tune the video speed with the slider or tap the buttons with commonly used speed settings.
  5. Pick one of the 20+ output formats and click the Export button. Download the clip to your device, Google Drive, or Dropbox.

3. Clipify

Have a PC running on Windows 7 or higher? Equip yourself with Clipify. Aside from slowing down your footage, you can use this beginner-friendly video editor to cut & glue your clips, record voiceovers and webcam clips, get rid of camera shake, enhance the visual appearance, apply 150+ filters, and much more.

  1. Launch the software after installing it on your computer.
  2. Add your video to the timeline and click Edit.
  3. Go to the Video Speed tab and drag the slider left to decrease the speed.
  4. With Clipify, you can also slow down a part of a video. Just split your clip using the same-name button, select the part you want to make slower, and follow steps 2 and 3.
  5. Click the Create Video button and choose the export format. You can upload it to YouTube & Facebook, adapt it for your smartphone and TV, burn it to DVD, and more.

4. Camtasia

Another computer program available on both Windows and macOS is Camtasia. This software is mostly used to create screencasts, but it’s also a video editor where you can apply visual effects, add annotations, edit audio, and cut & split your clips.

  1. Run the program after installing it on your PC.
  2. Click New Project and import your video into the software.
  3. Drag & drop your clip to the timeline, right-click, and choose the Add Clip Speed option.
  4. On the Properties menu, type the needed speed.
  5. Done! Click the Export button and download the clip as an MP4 or MOV local file, save it in your Google Drive, or upload it straight to YouTube.
